Michael F. Burgess

Michael Burgess is an insurance coverage and litigation attorney in Atlanta, Georgia. He specializes in providing insurance coverage advice to both domestic and international insurers regarding commercial general liability, commercial property, and bad faith claims. Additionally, he serves as defense counsel in direct litigation involving personal injury and premises liability claims in Georgia and Tennessee.
Michael joined Fields Howell as an associate in 2018 after serving as a summer associate for the firm in 2017. While at Fields Howell, Michael has worked on various multi-million dollar matters in both state and federal courts, including litigation involving COVID-19, pharmaceutical products, environmental and energy losses, and other large property and commercial liability claims. Prior to joining Fields Howell, Michael served as a legal intern at the Federal Trade Commission, the Environmental Finance Center at the University of North Carolina, and the Municipal Court of Roswell, Georgia.
Michael earned his Juris Doctor with Honors from Emory University School of Law after graduating summa cum laude from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science. At Emory, in addition to completing his coursework in the top third of his class, Michael served as Managing Editor of the Emory Corporate Governance and Accountability Law Review and as Treasurer of the National Security and Military Law Society. Outside of the office, Michael is an avid Atlanta sports fan and enjoys playing disc golf and hiking.
