Michael J. Ellis

Michael J. Ellis is an insurance defense attorney in Miami. He provides coverage advice to insurers and represents both insurers and their insureds in civil litigation. Michael focuses in the practice areas of insurance defense, property, commercial general liability, casualty and excess casualty, and commercial litigation.
While attending Florida International University College of Law, Michael interned for three judges at Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal: Judge Emas, Judge Miller, and Judge Lindsey. After graduating with honors, he served as Judge Lindsey’s law clerk. He also gained legal experience working as a law clerk at a business litigation firm in Miami and as a law clerk for the National Labor Relations Board.
A 2020 graduate of FIU Law, Michael set himself apart with his exceptional writing and orating skills. He served as President of FIU Law’s Moot Court Board of Appellate Advocates, earned the highest grade in his Legal Writing III class, and experienced tremendous success in national and regional Moot Court Competitions. He contributed to award-winning briefs in all three Moot Court competitions in which he competed and won two competitions outright. In the 2020 ABA Appellate Advocacy Competition, Michael’s brief-writing team ranked 3rd nationally out of 182 teams and went undefeated in the Brooklyn Regional. In the 2019 Orseck Moot Court Competition, his brief-writing team won Best Brief. In 2018 his team championed FIU Law’s 16th Annual Intramural Moot Court Competition and earned runner-up Best Brief. In 2021, Michael proudly coached FIU Law’s Moot Court team to a runner-up finish and orating award in Notre Dame’s Religious Freedom Moot Court Competition.
Prior to law school, Michael worked at the Florida House of Representatives as an Editor/Journal Writer.
